Tetrafluoroethylene Propylene (FEPM, AFLAS®) Materials

PROVIDING SUPERIOR ALL-AROUND CHEMICAL RESISTANCE

Tetrafluoroethylene propylene (FEPM), commonly known by the tradename AFLAS®, is a partially fluorinated elastomer designed for demanding chemical and high-temperature environments. Its melt-processable structure allows for efficient manufacturing using conventional injection molding and extrusion methods. FEPM is often selected over FKM (fluorocarbon rubber) in applications involving steam, amines, and aggressive chemical environments where standard fluorocarbon materials may degrade.

Tetrafluoroethylene propylene offers the following advantages over other rubber materials for the production of seals:

If you are manufacturing seals in harsh environments, consider putting tetrafluoroethylene propylene to work for your application. Reach out to North Coast Seal to learn more.

The Benefits Of Tetrafluoroethylene Propylene

Exceptional Heat And Chemical Resistance For Sealing Applications

Tetrafluoroethylene propylene is known as offering among the highest capabilities for chemical resistance. FEPM offers high-temperature resistance up to approximately 450°F (232°C) and maintains flexibility down to about 15°F (-9°C), making it well-suited for elevated temperature environments. FEPM is widely used in oil and gas, chemical processing, and energy applications where exposure to steam, amines, and harsh chemicals is common.

Tetrafluoroethylene propylene is compatible with the following:

  • Bases
  • Phosphate esters
  • Amines
  • Engine oils
  • Steam
  • Hot water
  • Pulp and paper liquors

FEPM may not be suitable for applications involving aromatic fuels, ketones, or chlorinated hydrocarbons, where alternative materials may perform better.

    FAQs About FEPM/AFLAS®

    1. What is FEPM (AFLAS®) used for?

FEPM is commonly used for seals, gaskets, and O-rings in oil and gas, chemical processing, and energy applications where exposure to steam and aggressive chemicals is common.

    2. How does FEPM compare to FKM?

FEPM offers better resistance to steam, amines, and certain chemicals, while FKM (fluorocarbon) is often preferred for fuel and hydrocarbon resistance. The right choice depends on the application environment.

    3. What temperature range can FEPM handle?

FEPM can typically withstand temperatures up to 450°F (232°C) and remains functional down to approximately 15°F (-9°C).

    4. What chemicals is FEPM resistant to?

FEPM provides strong resistance to bases, amines, phosphate esters, steam, hot water, and many industrial fluids, making it ideal for harsh chemical environments.
