Fire Barrier Seals
Fire Resistant Seals for Aerospace Applications
Sealing solutions for the aerospace industry are needed to create a fire-resistant fire protection barrier. On both commercial and military aircraft, fire barrier seals have a dual-purpose. They are used to keep air from leaking from gaps around windows and doors—ensuring that the pressure and oxygen levels in the cabin remain stable—as well as to be a barrier for fire containment. The goal of barrier seals is to optimize the performance of the aircraft, manage emissions output, and maintain standards for fuel economy while also adhering to very strict safety requirements. Fire Barrier Sealing Solutions
Lightweight and Versatile Materials
Fire barrier seals must be produced with meticulous attention to detail and material choice. Typical operating equipment in the aerospace industry ranges from temperatures as low as 58°F/-50°C up to highs of +527°F/+275°C, and seals—even in normal operation—can be exposed to significant thermal stresses. In the rare occasion of an engine fire, the fire must be contained in the engine’s body—this can require withstanding the flames for up to 15 minutes. In the process, temperatures can reach as high as 2000°F. For this reason, we choose fabric-reinforced materials like silicone for these challenging sealing areas.
