Brook Park’s North Coast Seal eyes warehouse expansion
October 21, 2013 — North Coast Seal, a Brook Park-based distributor of O-rings, seals, gaskets and sealing devices, is planning to quadruple its current 19,500 square-foot office and warehouse facility to accommodate continuous manufacturing and sales growth.
The company is targeting new space within Brook Park or close to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. This will be the company’s fourth physical expansion since its founding in 1985.
The move aligns with production and sales growth. North Coast Seal during the last two years has doubled its sales and is on pace to again double current figures over the next three years.
Leaders attribute the increase in part to the improved quality of its mass-produced O-ring. The distribution and fulfillment center in December 2012 invested $550,000 in a highly automated video inspection machine that maximizes quality and minimizes defects.
This machine, which North Coast Seal calls “Hector the Inspector,” accurately sorts out all O-ring manufacturer defects by inspecting and measuring each part with cameras and a laser.
They then are packaged with an automated packing machine so a human hand never touches them until the customer opens the bag.
“This ensures our customers a perfect part each and every time,” says sales manager Tom Sasura.
Most companies manufacture to a 2.5-4.0 acceptable quality level. The automated inspection elevates the O-ring to top-level quality and enables North Coast Seal to inspect more than 1 million O-rings per week.
“We’re able to meet the high demands for our customers with no quantity restrictions,” Sasura says.
The machine’s investment has paid off, as North Coast Seal has added new customers of all sizes, including a $3 billion operation. More customers —within the fluid power, oil, gas and water industries and beyond— are in the pipeline.
“ ‘Hector the Inspector’ allows us to go after larger OEMs with a critical sealing application, and that is exactly what we are doing,” Sasura says. “We listened to what our customers wanted and found a way to make a lifelong business relationship with them.”
